    Default G.p.s. How Close

How close can you get to a waypoint? I marked a boat on the bottom with the SI and created a waypoint. I tried to go back to it to view on the DI but i couldnt get over it. I spent about an hour trying to find it going in circles. When i would get close say 100ft. The picture of the boat and the lines and waypoint got confusing on which way to go. I was trying to match my COURSE# to the BEARING# but when i would get within 50ft or so the bearing# would change and i would end up passing it. Also I have the arrival alarm set to 50ft and it did not go off. I was under 50ft according to the D.T.G. Please help. Thanks Wilbur. P.S. THE speed fluctuates alot also 1.0 to 1.5 m.p.h. more than i am going according to a handheld garmin.
Do you think the puck could be bad. THANKS again WILBUR. OH its a 997

First..make sure your continuous navagation is set to "On" under the navagation tab...if it set to "Off" ...as soon as you get to your minimum arrival distance...the "Goto" function clears and waits for your next "Goto" command...

That is...if you use your "Goto" function...I usually don't....I just keep moving the "donut" until I get the blue waypoint icon in the center of the donut....

One thing I have found when marking waypoints out to the side of the screen...It seems that the accuracy of a marked waypoint is degraded by the track of the boat....

If I happen to turn or waver off a straight line before I can get my cursor activated, moved on top of the structure, and marked....the accuracy doesn't seem to be as...well...accurate...

So what I've learned to do is.....While I'm watching the SI...if something shows up out to the side that I want to mark as a waypoint...I try to keep the boat on a steady straight course until I can actually get the structure marked.....

This generally marks the structure close enough that I can find it again 99% of the time...

Also, about all those track lines that confuse the screen...sometimes I have to clear my current track in the navigation tab just to get rid of all the clutter....

    Hey Wilbur,

Set you track style to color by depth. Track should change colors with depth.

Positioning errors cause speed reading errors. Remember, these are not precision gps units.

I dunno. Mine jumps around at slow speeds. I just ignore it. I use my Garmin handheld.

I use th HB as the GOTO gps. I shutdown at a couple hundred ft from waypoint, then use my Garmin. Not a lot of waypoint clutter on my HB so it makes for easy navigation. This is just me. Don't let me discourage you with the 997 gps. Everyone uses it differently.
