    Default Ipilot Cruise Control

I took out the new trolling motor and Ipilot spider rigging yesterday. 0-5mph winds, was in a lake with no current.

I am struggling getting the cruise control function to work properly. Had it set in conjunction with the auto-pilot on .2 - .6mph and was constantly getting it to run up to 1.2mph while the cruise was on. I have used it quite a bit already, however it was in the river with a lot of current and just attribuited the cruise control mph fluctuation to a combination of current and wind, however there was absolutely no wind and I was in a man made lake with no current on sat. and still even with the cruise set on .2, the trolling motor would occasionally run the mph to 1.2.

I still like the thing, however think that it should be able to do a better job of keeping a constant mph.

I hope you get a good answer. I have stayed busy fishing I haven't really tried all the functions yet. I used the spot lock and was happy with it.The speed control worked good for me in the track mode. I compare the cruise to a car cruise. In a car if you go down a steep hill it shuts down the fuel but will not use the breaks to slow you. I wonder if the same is true if you have, say a 2 mph backwind? The unit would have to do a 180 to slow to your selected speed and I don't think it has that capability and like a regular trolling motor, you would have to do it manually. Of course this is just a thought because this is new to be also.
    It ain't nuttin but luck.

Used mine for 3 days on Buggs. Had it on cruise and AP at the same time. Had it set to .4 MPH and it did great. The only time it would get above .4 is when you were traveling with the wind and the wind was pushing you faster than .4.

    Thanks,

    Scott

I used my IPilot yesterday for the first time. Up until then I did not have a copilot or autopilot. At first I got frustrated because it seem to go off course when I would point it in a dirrection and set it in auto pilot and it would get me off course. I finally figured out that it did WAY better fishing into the wind. After a few hours I really got the hang of it and LOVE it.

It is a little overwhelming at first, I was driving me nuts hitting all the wrong buttons.

When I used my Ipilot during spider rigging, I found that it worked better if I used the Auto-pilot mode instead of Advanced Auto-pilot while using the speed control. You can set the Auto-pilot by holding the auto-pilot button for a few seconds. When the N is not in the circle you are in auto-pilot and with the circle you are in advanced auto-pilot. The advanced auto-pilot plots several GPS points on that line for course corrections and the troller will make hard course corrections and hard speed adjustments to get back on course. This will swing the front of the boat hard to make the GPS point. The bad thing about using the regular auto-pilot is when you get a gust of wind that pushs you backwards it will shut off because it thinks it is going too fast even though it is going the wrong way because it don't know which direction it is going. Today, I used it while long lining with the advanced auto-pilot and it works great for that. I just set the speed and direction, never worried about it and concentrated on fishing. I still think it is the best addition to my boat. I hope this helps.

I'm glad to mentioned that cuz several times my motor would shut off and I was wondering how it knew which way you were going

Been using a regular cable foot control for 20 plus years on tidal rivers. I found that I could do a better job of controlling the boat taking into account the wind or current then the ipilot can. I just fished three days on Buggs Island with it. The first two days it was blowing 15mph or so. I ended up just running it myself, always went against the wind so that didnt make a difference for me. The spot lock was terrible in my opinion. The third day there was no wind to speak of and was spider riggin. It worked great for this and was pleased with it in this condition. I read many reviews before buying mine as it was a lot of money for me to invest. I read where some pro used it on Lake Erie in a 20mph wind and spot lot worked perfect (Shyaaaa as if). Anyway I know most will disagree with me but as far as I can tell it is not worth the investment at this point.
