The advanced auto-pilot plots several GPS points on that line for course corrections and the troller will make hard course corrections and hard speed adjustments to get back on course. This will swing the front of the boat hard to make the GPS point. The bad thing about using the regular auto-pilot is when you get a gust of wind that pushs you backwards it will shut off because it thinks it is going too fast even though it is going the wrong way because it don't know which direction it is going. Today, I used it while long lining with the advanced auto-pilot and it works great for that. I just set the speed and direction, never worried about it and concentrated on fishing. I still think it is the best addition to my boat. I hope this helps.
I'm glad to mentioned that cuz several times my motor would shut off and I was wondering how it knew which way you were going
