Battery Question

Will a car battery work in place of a deep cycle trolling battery? Not just for a quick fix. A friend is willing to give me a car battery and insist it can be used for a deep cell.

NP, it will work...until it dies. Regular batteries cannot withstand the charging and pulling down like a marine battery can. They just dont have enough plates inside. I have used them. And they got me by. Just didnt last long though. Might last lon ger cranking your boat motor rather than running your troller. Just my opinion...

Don't connect it to your motor, especially if you have an unregulated charging circuit. These circuits use the battery for regulation and there are not enough plates in an auto battery to do the job. This results in extra high voltage which a lot of electronics don't like

Plates are thicker and more of them in a marine deep cycle. Car battery is a car battery. Thank him and start saving for a real battery. Just my 2 cents worth.

I have use them for spares for years. Never had a problem. They are just not meant for the constant discharge and recharge.
As far as the extra voltage??? 12 volts is twelve volts no matter what. The amp draw is determined by the motor not the battery.

I have also used one when I had to. But a posted. I had issues with high voltage. Even to the point of my depth finder showing a message that it was about to shut down because of it.

I have used a car battery in pinch years ago, but Yes you can get a voltage spike from them when your motor is running. With these new electronics I would NOT ever try it again as all you need is one spike & u going to be need a new fish finder, cause you gonna fry it crispier than a crappie.............................

No! You can't get a voltage spike from a battery! Each car battery only has six cells in total they produce 12.5 volts. ONLY 12.5 volts. They can not produce any more. That is basic electricity. And how do I know? Well, I am a ASE certified master auto technician and have been for 18 yrs.
If you think that a battery can produce voltage beyond 12.5 volts feel free to explain your "theory."
You can have a spike of amperage however. It happens often when a motor is started. But that is not related to the battery at all. You can connect a amp meter to a trolling motor and turn it on. You may often see a spike in amperage then a sudden drop to what is the normal running voltage. There is no difference in a car battery than a deep cycling battery other than a deep cycling battery is built for constant discharge and recharge.
They have no internal regulator!
