    Default Splice Transducer cable?

HB 565, crushed and cut transducer cable in at least one place, temperature does not work at all now, depth seems to, but other details like fish and structure seem intermittent. Can I cut out bad section and splice back the cable or am I looking at a new transducer? Transducer mounted on trolling motor. Looking at another route for cable.

You can splice, but the temp will not be correct. When you splice a thermocouple wire you make a "cold junction thermocouple" it will read the temp at the junction point and not at the ture test point. But the sonar should work.

I asked the same question on here about 2 years ago. By the advice of several I tried it and it worked perfectly. That unit did not have a temp. gauge so I can't say if it will affect that. I say give it a try.

We don’t use thermocouple wire in our transducers or temp sensors. We use a standard Thermistor and regular wire. Unless you make a resistive solder connection splicing the temperature side of the transducer cable should not make any noticeable difference. Just make sure whoever splices the cable reconnects any noise shielding as well than make sure its all sealed well. I would not splice it if the break would be below the waterline or is in an area where the cable needs to flex.

Might want to finish the job with liquid electric tape. Good stuff. Used it around salt water with good results. Tape or shrink as usual, then clean and coat with the liquid.

thanks guys, my 565 was fogging up so bad I sent it back to HB for repair, sent transducer along to be checked out, when I get it back I will attempt to splice it. the liquid tape sounds like a good idea where do you get it?

Walmart or any marine supply store carries it.

If the break is below he waterline, use dual wall heat shrink on the soldered wires and also dual wall on the cable itself.

Dual wall heat shrink is made for watertight sealing. I use it on my ROV robots and successfully dive 1 atmosphere with no leaks.

Google up dual wall heat shrink and read the specs.

    Also,

If your break is in a flex area, if you can,,,, shorten the cable and splice in a non flex area. In flexing areas, I use spiral wrap. Good dodo that spiral wrap. In fact, I wrap most of my wires in the spiral wrap. Looks good and is protected from me.

Nothing special about transducer wires, so don't believe any bullchips.
