was thinking of a relatively inexpensive depthfinder and was wondering about the 535 or would the 565 be better or is there another brand/model that folks prefer?

I would go with the 565 because it is a Dual Beam Unit and you will get more bottom coverage.
Bought a 565 about 8 mo ago and wonder why I didn't have one before this. 60 degree cone instead of 20, and plenty sensitive for the front of most peoples boat. 1 example; while trolling I came up on some unknown structure. Looked like clouds on the bird. I looked closer and the clouds were full of fleas----Fish!!! Turned out to be cedar trees full of fish. Went upwind, anchored and won the tourney. No one in my club had fished that area lately, but it's busy now. Best for the money IMHO.

To get a sonar with the specs of the 565 in color your looking at $500+.
In monochrome for under $200 the 565 is a bargin. Spend the $50 extra and get the 565.
Definitely the 565 – twice the vertical pixels plus the dual-beam transducer. Both of these units are great for the money, but the 565 is more than worth the extra few bucks. I just did some price comparisons last night for a post on my website but I don’t have the information online yet. Cabelas and WestMarine had the best deal at $179. The WestMarine deal is using a 10% coupon code you can get on TopFishFinders.com . Let me know if you find a better deal.
