It doesn't need to be put on point of hook to work, but just blocking the point. You would need to sell with it, the weighted jig, that applies to it's use.

Jacobs makes a little plastic that fits over the eye of the hook and comes back that should work fine for this it's something that I was thinking about also he makes a plastic bait mold with the weed guard on it.
