Thread: Doing a top/bottom in a side/side mold

Looks great. I attempted this on my 16 cavity stinger a couple months ago and gave up. Too many cavities. This mold you have is more reasonable.

Its not done with a dual injector. I hand poured one side of the mold and then turned the pours 90 degrees. When this is done 1/2 of the pour is in the cavity, the other half is just hanging there until the mold is carefully closed. The mold has to remain flat for the injection because if set upright the pieces will fall out of orientation inside the mold. I clamped this mold to my workbench top and did a side injection. Fortunately the injection pressure did not dislodge the pieces set in the cavities. The injection temperature was done fairly hot and the injection itself was done slow.

I guess I wanted to see if it would work. I will not be doing any orders using this technique. I really prefer tail colors over split body colors. I just had some time to mess with things and this shot got the attention. A 16 cavity mold would be nerve wracking. I think I had the inserts fall out of place five or six times.....sometimes all of them, sometimes more than a couple. I expected some to get undershot during the injection and when the mold was opened and all five were as you see them I about dropped. For a few personal baits if time isn't an issue, ya I can see doing a couple colors using this technique but doing more than that would eat up a couple hours in a hurry. I had to try and nw can say I did it, lol.
