still fun on light line.
Hit up a mess of these guys while throwing crappie jigs this morning. Man are they pretty fish in cold water.
The crappies didn't deny us either. Two of us each brought home 7 for dinner tonight and we tossed back a pile more. The crappie bite has finally responded to the recent warmer weather. The smallies though are a treat even if the season hasn't opened yet and they're safe with this boy as I won't keep a bass anyway.

The SE corner of the state I live in has a heavy influence of limestone and this adds a lot of mineral to the water. I read more than once that waters with a high mineral content can become a factor in how fish get colored...how bright or bold the coloration is. I never put much stock in this idea earlier but wonder about it now. The lm and sm bass, the crappies and sunfishes, and the northern that come from this area are all very bright and vividly colored.
where I lived in Oregon we Smallmouth bass within 100 feet of my house and we caught them all summer in the main reservoir which was 65 miles long, Brownlee was a small mouth heaven we can't literally hundreds of them and they are a lot of fun to catch. we usually use nothing but jigs because most of time we were fishing for crappie I used to get pretty upset because the smallmouth would not leave me alone smallmouth are a lot of fun to catch and they do put up a good battle.

We only saw one smallie this morning but the crappies more than made up for it. We hit the water right at 530 am and fished until 900. The lake gets too many nit wits and zeros on it on weekends but they aren't early risers.
We were loading up when 5 big rigs showed up to get ready to launch. From one truck a woman with a black lab on a leash and a kid were hanging around the water's edge and finally they walked to the end of the dock. The kid was teasing the dog with a stick and the old lady said to quit with the teasing so the kid tossed the stick in the water about forty feet up-shore. Remember I said the woman had the dog on a leash....a lab yet? I guess I don't have to tell what happened when that stick left the kid's hand do I? lol
