I look for molds that are minnow imitators, stingers, or grubs in the 1.5 to 2.0 inch range. The mold has got to catch you before it will catch fish. The most important tool you will ever have is confidence. If you do not believe in the lure you are making then it will just sit on the shelf. Here are my top molds that I personally have confidence in. Again I prefer 1.5 to 2.0 inches for crappie.
