Thread: dimples in baits?

I am having trouble with having dimples in baits, my stinger and bloodied molds do fine, but my shad stinger molds in 1.5" and 2" are not coming out right. Is there something I am not doing right? I am not sure on temp, I need to get a new thermometer, but have shot baits for awhile and usually am real close on temps. Any suggestions? The molds are new from Jacobs baits, the 2" is a 40 cavity and the 1.5" molds are 10 cavity.

I usually try and make sure my hot plastic runs freely like syrup. When I inject a mold I push the plunfer slowly until it stops and then hold it there for about ten seconds. I use scissors to cut the plastic from the plunger. Usually I am heating until about 350 degrees.

What's probably happening is the plastic is cooling at un-even rates. Try topping off the sprue so when the plastic begins to cool and pull back into the opening it has plastic to take in . You may be un-molding too soon too. I'm in the opposite school of Ship and think you should try shooting a cooler plastic in those larger capacity molds. By all means have a digital thermometer on hand to check plastic temps. You don't mention what plastic you are shooting...hard, medium or soft. The softer the plastic the more challenging it is to shoot and dents are the first headache. I'd give Jacobs a call to see what he recommends.

try heating your molds up also injector let me know of this helps you.

I have that problem too from time to time. Have not tried to iron it out on whether I am shooting too hot or too cold but like the guys have said, it is either one or the other or Like CTom said, You may be demolding too soon. A lot of small details can mean a lot shooting baits from my experience.CF

I have the same problem too, I shoot the 2" shad from Jacobs I have tried hot, cooler, wait longer it has not changed it. I feel that it maybe the spur is too small on mine I have been told to hold pressure for a few seconds longer with the injector but have not tried it yet!!

I think you have the 40 cavity mold I am wanting to buy. That is a great bait if it is the one I am thinking about. Please let me know if you get the dimple thing figured out I am trying to decide whether to purchase it or not.

Are you talking about the baby shed Stanger we have a large mold and shoot it without any problems.

yes I am talking about the baby shad stinger. Do you have the 40 cavity?

yes I do have the 40 cavity and I do not have any problems also have a laminate plate which I do not use our used dual injection either way I still don't have any problems. I asked Rick to build a 40 cavity baby shed Stanger mold for me and now he has them available on his site I've had other multi cavity molds made by Rick that I don't have any problems with either if I do I preheat the molds at about 325 and this is for real fine details on some plastic baits going back to the 40 cavity mold I shot over 3000 one guy last year all of them come out perfect using the 40 cavity mold.
