I think the rule of thumb is try to stay less than 2"...but there are lots of big crappies caught on larger baits!

Some ppl like using small baits... Less than 2". Some ppl like using large baits... More than 2". Both catch fish! I prefer larger baits and use jigs that are as big as 3". I clean a bunch of fish that have 3 to 4 inch shad in their gut!

I think size also relates to quantity verses quality of fish as well. I use 1.5 to 2 inch baits usually and hardly ever go bigger. I think I catch mor fish that way because I catch a lot of small fish too. I do cath my share of big fish too on small baits though. I think though that overall you wont catch as many smaller fish on bigger baits and you will catch more bigger fish on bigger baits. Since I catch my share of plenty I would rather use smaller baits and catch more fish. That is just my personal preference and not a suggestion.
