Thread: Question form a new guy

Hey all, I am looking into beginning to make my own crappie and white bass rigs. I am looking into buying the 2" baby minnow kit from Bear's Bait which comes with a gallon of the plastic.

My question is, anyone give me an idea of how much plastic those molds require and how many molds of that size I can go through with the gallon jug?

A lot depends on if you are making a ton of baits to sell or just making a few dozen for yourself. Are you making baits 24/7 or just once in a while? The other factor to consider is how many cavities a mold has. Most of the molds I Have are 12 cavity. I may make up 1/2 to 3/4 cup of plastisol in a pyrex cup at a time. That is plenty to fill the mold at least 5-10 times since I do a lot of two color projects. I store the made up plastic in a zip lock bag and just cut off enough for what I am using that day. Less chance of burning it all up if you overheat it in the microwave. Since I do not sell my baits I only buy a quart at a time. Be sure and read all safety stickies at the top of the forum. A Gallon will make enough Baby Shads for one weekend warrior to fish a Year. When you shoot your baits set your sprews aside and reheat them. More plastic in the sprew than in the baits itself. Ship summed it up very well

Thanks for the answers Ship and PP. I am going to be starting out doing mostly for myself and family but also want to start selling. I am going to start out by sending out a few packs to different guides and such to get opinions.
