3 to 20 ft is what i do but i know guys who go 30 35

I had the same thoughts as you.... but I started fishing RC with some retired guys and they had christmas trees sunk in 30+ water and catch a ton of crappie over them (18 - 22 ft deep)....But they are placed next an existing tree that comes above the water so they can tie off and fish over the tree.....

I likes em shaller. 10 ft or less. Gotta watch out that the ski boaters n beavers don't haul em off though.

Lake Greeson's lake level fluctuates depending on how much rain we get and how much water they are using to generate electricity. We know that full pool is 548msl, they don't like to see it above 550msl, the average norm is 542msl during spring and around 536msl during the fall. We put spawning cover (bamboo flat mats, mega mats and laydowns) in the lake at various depths from about 532msl to 538msl and when she's at full pool the banks provide the cover. We also put out the tall bucket type bamboo crappie condos on points, inside bends of creek channels and the middle of deeper coves at a wide variety of depths to accommodate the crappie's comfort zone. By a variety of depth I mean we'll put 3 on a point - one relative shallow, one at a mid-range and one deep. For the creek channels we'll put one on top, one down the drop and one in the bottom. So depending on lake level these can be as shallow as 12' and as deep as 45'. Doing this allows us to fish for crappie year round. It's alot of work but well worth the effort. Doing it this way is what I call making a portfolio of spots to fish. Once you find a pattern you can run and gun to all the spots on the lake alike and either go home with a nice mess of fish or when they're not biting well go back to the ramp with some fish when nobody else caught any. The chanllenging days are the fun ones.
