I'm with broharrell, Telephone Wire is the best.

My uncle used to work for BellSouth and that's what we used. I have been using a little coated tie wire I got from the rodbusters at the last job I was on and it works ok but it will eventually rust out.

Any kind of insulated wire will work good. Telephone wire is good. If you can't find it, find an electrician's shop and check the dumpster near it. Lots of times they will end up with several feet on a spool and they can't splice it so they just throw it away. They were wiring PA systems and electronic door latches where I worked and I got enough wire from that to last for years.
