Walnut branching is very open. Nimrod likes Persimmon because of its open branching, says it will hold larger fish. I use whatever is at hand, preferably water or willow oak but often sweetgum. Caught some big crappie last year from structure I found with depth finder, lake got low, discovered the structure was sweet gum with the leaves still on.

I have heard the walnut husk stories, I think they put the green walnut husks in some sort of bag, like burlap, then kind of pulverize them and drag the bag of them around in the water to stun the fish.

I can't really see the tree tops having the same effects. I would put them out and take some notes. Please let us know if you do and they work good.

Juglins are found mostly in the husk of the nuts but also in the leaves and roots. There may well be lower amounts in the bark and wood that would probably leach out over time. I suspect that might take a while. You may not get much action the first couple of years but it is probably worth trying.
Scientific name for Black Walnut: Juglans Nigra

In my opinion, if in doubt, leave it out! I might try a small sample somewhere first but you might also add a little bit to an already good spot and ruin it.
