Thread: Thawing Boston butts

Sometime back I purchased (8) butts to bbq. Plans got changed and did not get to cook them as planned. I stored them in the freezer and they have been frozen for about 4 months. What is a good way to thaw them to keep the meat in as good a condition as possible: also about how long should it take them to thaw if I just put them in the fridge until thawed

Let us know how it turns out! I have 4 packs with 2 each so I'm in the same boat!

Same as a frozen turkey, about a week.

I bbq butts and fresh picnic's all the time and buy when on sale and freeze, thaw in fridge takes bout 3 to 4 days.

I buy butts in bulk when the price is right, then freeze until I get ready to cook. I thaw four at a time, all I do is place them in a large cooler with no ice a couple days before I get ready to cook. I check on them a few times a day, if they feel like they are thawed "temp. inside cooler is not real cold" I throw a little ice on them until ready to cook. This keeps my better half happy because her fridge is not full. I do this with a regular inexpensive igloo cooler, Hope this helps.

I buy Boston Butt's when they are on sale then grind them up with electric grinder and add Legg's sausage season. This makes a lot better sausage than the store bought brands. I also add deer at times to this same mix. 1/2 Boston Butt, 1/2 deer and Legg's season to make deer sausage.

Place in the sink and fill with cool water. Change water out every hour. Should be defrosted in about 4-5 hours (and still cold). Or do the same in a cooler. The more movement the water has, the quicker it defrost. Or set in the refridge for 3+ days.
