• Smelt fishing

Well, its a cousin of the salmon so I guess this is the most appropriate place to post. I have caught big fish, small fish, and everything in between but my favorite species to fish for is the rainbow smelt. What you lack in size, you make up for in numbers and a fresh smelt is the most delicious seafood there is! These pics were taken on my last ice fishing trip to one of the many smelt camps in coastal maine. The 2 fish on the left in the picture above are tomcods. Good times, a heated shack, lots of food and beer

We use to have great smelt runs in the spring here. But that was long ago......

Now we just go to Ronnie's Ceder Inn and order a smelt dinner. Most of the time you can't finish it all.

It is fun. This year and last it has been very slow fishing. I live on a river and the smelting has been going downhill for several years now. Lets hope it has bottomed out. If not it will be extinct. Good table fare.
