Well switched over and tried shellcracker fishing about a month ago to see if i could get them to bite were i used to catch them back in the 80's and mid 90's. The fishing back then was short of unbelievable for shellcrackers. Ive got news for you. There bbbaaccckkk. I have caught 59 citations in the last month. They have came from all the norfolk lakes B.M. , W.B. and Prince. Most where caught between 8' to 16' deep. The biggest was 1lb 14oz and the most caught in one day was 14 citations and several days i have had 9 to 10 citations. Should have been able to catch more but i could not fish like i wanted to due to work. Ive had alot of fish in the 1lb 8oz to 1lb 10oz range. I'm getting ready to switch back to crappie and yellow perch. I miss catching those specks.
Great catches. Would you mind telling some basics of how you fish for them and what bait you typically use?
I usually slide on a 1/8 oz egg sinker on my main line then tie on a small barrel swivel then a 18" leader and then tie on a #4 wire hook so it will pull straight if i get hung on stumps. Red wigglers seem to do the best for me.
It sounds like you're using a Carolina Rig or the classic bottom rig for catfishing, just using much smaller tackle. I'm going to try this as I've always straightlined with a simple split shot and #2 or #4 long shank hook. I think your method is much better and more stealth, they may not feel as much resistance with your method?
