• Kentucky Lake Big Sandy Fishing Report for Aug. 17,2013

Hi folks. Welcome to Richard Williams Outdoors.

The water levels here on Kentucky Lake went way up to almost 361 after the heavy rains that we had in the first part of the week. Then TVA started sucking the bottom out of the lake and by the end of the weekend, they are supposed to be at the 357.9 level. The surface temperatures have come down into the upper 70’s. However, we are supposed to get some more 90 degree plus weather days. So I’m sure the water temperatures will go back up into the 80’s again.

The crappie fishing this week has gone from fair to just about nothing. I have not talked to anyone this week that has done very good in the catching department when it comes to crappie. But that is due in part by the rising and falling water levels we had this week. Crappie will feed some if the lake levels are rising. But if the levels are falling very fast at all, crappie will look for the thickest structure they can find and dig in tight. And they won’t come out or hit nothing until the levels quit falling.

Bass on the other hand, are completely opposite from crappie. If there is current, that seems to trigger the feeding button for bass and they become aggressive when it comes to taking a bait. I have talked with several bass anglers this week that said when TVA turned on the generators and opened the gates, they went from struggling to catch anything to getting a strike ever other cast or so. Most of the bass folks said they were fishing on the ledges out on the Tennessee River.

The stripers were also hitting good when there was a lot of current in the river systems. But when TVA cut back on the gates and slowed the current down, the stripers also slowed down and quit hitting as good as they were when the water was moving pretty fast.

I have not heard from any of the cat fish or blue gill anglers this week. But I would think that their fishing has been just about non existent this week because of the weather and the fluctuating water levels. The cat fishing should be back to normal next week when the weather turns back to being hot and humid.

Well that’s all the time we have for this week.
    See-ya on the water folks.
    Thanks for listening.
