Sorry for the reflection in the picture but the very large school of 4-5in Black Crappie are easily seen. I found several schools like this in brackish water. They certainly didn't seem to mind as I verified species by catching 6 in a row of 6 drops of the jig. Migrating up river these schools should help to repopulate the Pearl. Bon Temp's and the Guys are doing well with the Black Crappie but they are a little further west where I don't think they remained at 9 degrees for as long as the Pearl river did. A very positive find to be sure.
Larger Black Crappie were few and far between jig drops but I hammered the Bull Shellcrackers I found in some deep holes. As they hit the Monkeymilk jig I kept thinking surely there can't be more but another one would thump the micro jig like a big Crappie. I had a spark plug fouling and a trolling motor battery failing so I didn't stay all day. Turns out cylinder 3 was soaked by the time I got back to the dock and my 70 pound trolling motor was barely pulling against the weak NIP tide so it was a good choice to head in early. I still have 1/2 a 25qt cooler of Shellcrackers to clean. Can anyone say TACO?
Since this article was first posted I have verified we did have a fish kill on the Jourdan river watershed. I have yet to find someone who lives on the Pearl (few houses) to confirm they saw floating dead Crappie or other fish. After a freeze fish will float for a while then sink before anyone gets out on the water.
