Since just before the Hurricane last month I haven’t fished. The river rose to very high levels and was running fast. And that’s if you could get on it, which you couldn’t. Every ramp I asked about was closed except those in salt water. Then there was the wind. My aluminum Jon doesn’t do well in winds over ten miles an hour. So instead of just going nuts I shot some clay targets and caught back up with that circle of friends. About two weeks back the ramps opened up and slowly folks started fishing again. To see what was up, NiNo got out for a short trip. He got a few and come Saturday he and I went looking in earnest. And we found some. Ran into a YouTube friend of mine and he was out there too. The wind wasn’t bad and we just ran out of time and started wrapping rods up to go. About then Jeff came back by and we compared notes. It seems that we had gotten twenty good fish, all released, and a few shorts. Jeff was using beetle spins and roadrunners and had less than 5. We had no spinners on. There’s a lesson in that somewhere.

I work with some pretty awesome folks and only a few like to fish, or even eat fish for that matter. Benny is 73 and could work most everyone under the table. Not a big bruiser of a fella at all, he just keeps moving all day. And at 5 years older than me, moves much better. I’ve brought him fish once or twice and he’s very appreciative. The weather report said that we would have a window til about 10:30 before the wind would pick up above my comfort zone. He met me at seven and we fished til about 10:30 when I noticed the wind getting a bit stiffer. Bumped into Jeff again about 30 minutes before we left. He was doing better this day. This was a new way of fishing for Benny and he was really enjoying himself. We finished the day with 9 good keepers and a few shorts and some that came unbuttoned. We had gone upwind in the morning before the wind got up and it turned out to be a smart move. Now that it was sporty out there all we had to do was run downwind to the ramp. Foam trails were everywhere from the whitecaps and wind. We had no issues. He’s a good man in the boat and I enjoyed his company. We’ll do it again sometime. Thanks for reading and I hope you’re getting a few yourselves. Til next time…….Skeet

Reminds me of some we caught years ago that were black like that except the black came off on your hands. Never did figure that out but they still ate good.
