We ended up keeping 13 of 14 legal crappie but threw back a 10” fish with instructions to put on some weight and grow up. I was lucky enough to catch my second tarp (14 1/8”) black crappie of the month of August. I added a blue catfish that I took home for dinner. Phil caught a spotted bass in addition to the crappie that he landed. We both caught a few short crappie as well.
We were fishing what is probably my favorite offshore delta structure and it is at least 1/4 mile to the nearest shoreline, so when I say offshore, I mean offshore. I caught my fish on a custom colored 2” Bobby Garland Slab Slayer and Phil caught fish on Blue Thunder and Lights Out colors. The fish preferred the custom color. Grin. I caught the tarp fish on a 25 count. Jig hit the bottom on my 25 second drop and I lifted the jig slightly and let it drop and the fish hit it immediately. Most fishermen say that crappie always feed up and they do sometimes, but you wouldn’t believe how many fish that we catch on the bottom. That is all I’m going to say about that.
I do not own nor will I ever have a Livescope or forward looking sonar.
