• Keep it simple

I have been staying at a campground this week on a lake that I have never fished. Had my boat here for four days. The first day I did a couple of recon trips trying to figure out the layout of the lake. Trolled back through a spot that I had marked some fish on my sonar but didn’t catch anything.

The second day I went back to that spot to cast around and see what was up. I caught quite a few nice Pumpkinseeds, a couple of White Perch and some Yellow Perch. Not bad for learning. Upon returning to the dock there were some kids fishing around the dock and catching Crappie. Not bad ones either. They were hanging right under the dock and under a pontoon boat. Apparently I was way overthinking it.

The next day a father and son were fishing at the dock and I told them where the kids were catching the fish. I looked under the dock and sure enough there was still a school of 8 to 10 inch crappie under there. I gave the son a Bobby Garland baby shad in Screamer color and sprayed some G sauce on it for him. Figured he could use a little help. Then I went off to explore some more. Never found out how they did. Turns out I should have stayed at the dock to fish. I didn’t catch much that day.

The fourth morning after the rain stopped I walked out to the dock and no kids were fishing so I checked to see if the fish were still there. I grabbed my rod and jigged up a few of them. Good way to start the morning. After that I went out to try to catch some Crappie in the main part of the lake. I found a couple of small ones and a mix of some other species.

Fun times over all. This is a big lake to explore and from talking to others there is actually some nice fish I just haven’t gotten onto them yet. Nice campground to stay at also. I will definitely try to explore this some more in the future. Here are a couple of pics to prove I didn’t get skunked. However I learned a lesson from the kids.

    1. Don’t over think it.

    2. Keep it simple.

Great story, great pictures. Sounds like with some time on that lake and learning it might be key. It’s a tough time of the year to fish they are more close lipped than not, so if you can catch some right now imagine in the fall !
