I worked the skinny water on the North end of Limestone bay today trying to find areas out of the wind. Never got on a pattern or even a consistent color. Most fish I caught were in 18 to 24 inches of water. I caught around 70 or 80 Crappie for the day, kept a limit.
I’d write more but I never found a pattern. I’d shake a jig at every stump, tree or laydown that I found. Some would hold a Crappie, but never more than a single. The next piece of cover wouldn't have anything.
I’m not sure if the cold front shut down the fish or if they started moving back to deeper water. With the wind I was stuck in my area and couldn’t hunt. All and all, a cold and windy day, but I caught a few and didn’t drown! I’ll post pictures tomorrow when I clean them. I decided to leave my Crappie on ice for the night, I didn’t want to further extend my stay outside!
After cleaning the fish I’ve got a better idea of what happen yesterday. 28 of the 30 were male Crappie. I’m guessing they’ve starting to move up early looking for spawning areas. Their tails weren’t bloody or torn up so they haven’t started fanning beds yet, just looking. That should mean the females are staged on the first major drop off. I sure wished I had time to go looking today while the wind is down!
