Great neighbors by the way. A couple months earlier Bill offered to take me out on my home. Little did I know it was going to be a five hour tour. Man Lake Griffin is big. A lot bigger than I thought. Canals, islands and big gators. It's a real cool lake, now if I can only figure out how to catch crappie on it!
I'm not sure you can really say I was in the Gulf Of Mexico when I suppose I was more in just the tidal areas inside a bunch of islands. You really have to mind your tides. We thought we were going out during a rising tide, but it was actually falling. We ended up stuck a few times and Bill had to pull us across some sand bars.
The shallows were teaming with life. We snuck up on these three small Manta Rays, and I even had time to break out the camera to take a picture of them. I guess you can tell them from the Sting Rays by their pointed wings. They all looked alike to me. It must have been mating season or something, there were rays all over the place. Literally every where you looked you could see their shadows swimming here and there. Some of them were huge.
One of our first catches, a Blue Crab. There were crab traps everywhere yet there was still a crab here willing to hang onto a shrimp on a hook long enough to get pulled into a boat.
Wow, even a ray this size pulls like a son-of a-gun. They are flat and seem three times their size while you are fighting them.
We caught a ton of these Speckled Trout. Released them all cause they were too short to keep.
We seen many dolphins. They were chasing bait fish into the shallows where you could see all the splashing. It was quite a surprise for me to see these big mammals in the shallows like that. Thank you Bill and Roxanne for a wonderful trip, we had a great time together. Next time we won't worry about the tides, because we'll bring our yaks.
