• Buffalo's Like Cookies!!!!

While this may seem like just another "fishin' pic" there is much more to it than meets the eye.

While my wife Rida and I were stationed at Ft. Hood, TX we frequented an awesome crappie dock called Frank's Marina. One day a couple summers ago, Rida got bored catching crappie and started talking to a local kid who was fishing for buffalo with doughbait he made at home (ingredients included big peanut butter, jelly, bran flakes, maple syrup, flour, sugar, and cherry cola). She came back over and told me she was going home to make some for herself to which I happily said go ahead (laughing the entire time becaue it sounded like a 3 yr olds lunch time cookie concoction.)

An hour later she returned, dough bait in tow and ready to catch a buffalo carp. Mind you, she had 4 lb test line spooled onto a larger spinning reel (because she didn't like having to stop fishing to add more line) which she had on an 8 foot medium action pole.

She then puts this monstrous glob of dough bait the size of a golf ball on a treble hook that she stole off of one of my crankbaits and drops it straight to the bottom.

Rida sat there for about 3 hours without a single bite. My buddies and I kept teasing her during that time teling her she was wasting her time while we were pulling in slabs left n right. She told us o mind our business because she was going to catch the biggest fish anyone had seen come out of Franks.

All of a sudden her pole dipped down and she yells honey, I think I got one. I of course told her she was full of it and she insisted "no no, my line is swimming away slowly!" I told er to set the hook and the next 35 minutes were CHAOS!

This thing took off like a bullet train and all she could do was hang on. She had never caught anything bigger than her hand so this was very unfamiliar territory. She kept yelling for me to take the pole from her as it double over and lined screamed off of it. I simple checked to make sure there was at a slight amount of drag and told her "nope, have fun!" After about 30 minutes of runs and then reeling as fast as she could when the fish would come towards her the buffalo finally tired out.

A buddy and me went to net the fish as he slowly came to the surface. He decided twasn't time to go and took off one last time. After about 5 more minutes he gave up and we netted him onto the dock.

When all was said and done, Rida had caught her first buffalo, this 26 lb beauty on 4 lb test. Not sure if it was some type of record or not but we do know buffalo's eat cookies.

Nice fish. I ate some buffalo last week. Better than whiteperch in my book. Caught them in a hoopnet.

I had my wife hook one like that once on a tube jig with 4 pound test and a 4 1/2 foot rod. After 30 seconds she gave me the rod. It took me 20 minutes or so to get it to net. This was at a boat dock and by the time I had it netted an audience had gathered. I think they were disappointed that the fish lost. So I can relate to her experience, sure was fun and tested my ability to land a big fish on a light line. Give her a high five for me.

I might have to try that, although it does sound like something my 6 year old would cook up.

Thanks for all the comments guys. My wife got a kick out of seeing her pic/story on here too. We love reading all of reports and stories and seeing the pics you post. Helps get through the winter where fishing doesnt happen as often as it should.
