I remember one time in particular on Lake Woodruff(I believe, Dad, correct me if I’m wrong) we went out fishing for the dumb ones(aka whatever would bite) and he was using all of the right methods he had learned while I was casting where ever I thought there might be a fish. He was telling me to cast in front of the boat(I always sat in the back by the prop, he sat up front to steer the trolling motor) because the fish wouldn’t be there after the boat went through. I did what typical 10/11 year olds do and said, “ Ok Daddy, but let me try this...” I remember when the first one hit he was silent, and when I reeled it in closer and he saw it was a bass I think he got more excited than I was! I ended up landing 2 good sized bass that day, and we ate good that night.
I’ve got enough fishing stories with dad, from chasing the schoolies in the Deltona lakes to fighting Reds on the coast, and I wouldn’t trade those memories for anything. Thank you for teaching me the fun of listening to a 1 pound crappie destroy the ‘drag’ on a snoopy pole, and always bating my hook when we used crickets because I didn’t want them to jump on me. It’s only fitting that I put some of the lyrics to our song on this post.
I say, 'Daddy loves you, baby' one more time
She says, 'I know ... I think I've got a bite.
And all this laughin', cryin', smilin',
dyin' here inside's what I call, livin'
And she thinks we’re just fishin' on the riverside
Throwin' back what we could fry
Drownin' worms and killin' time
Nothin' too ambitious
She ain't even thinkin' 'bout
What's really goin' on right now
But I guarantee this memory's a big'in
Happy Father’s Day to my favorite fishing buddy, SkeetBum. I love you and can’t wait to see you and give you a hug tonight!
Pics attached are of that famous first bass, both of us giving fishy kisses, a much younger Skeet cleaning fish, and the official Papa’s Fishing Fanclub
