Heat Wave

Today was the start of the projected "heat wave", which suppose to last for the next 7 days! This is quite unusual for we "yankees" up here, but I know you fine southern folks know how to deal with it. We do not! However, that did not prevent Walt & I from "percervering" (as the old Indian said), so we launched and started to fish around 7:25 am this morning. This is what our day looked like:



About as pretty as it gets! Air started off at 63 degrees, with a predicted rise to 90 by mid afternoon. Water temp was 70 degrees. Breezes were calm to very light. Shortly after we lowered our lines and turned on the side pulling trolling motor, we had a fish in the boat. And another....and another..... The action was fast & furious for about the first 3 hours. By 10:00 am the sun became oppressively hot.

We used larger baits this time around, with 2 1/4" Slider Minnows and 3" Slider Grubs. They worked great! My old reliable 1/16 oz. marabou horse head spins put in a good showing as well. We fished from 12' to 24' depths, side pulling our way around and around as we checked out the main basin areas. Here are a couple of shots of the fish & bait the old Hummingbird showed us:





I've got to admit that Walt had the "hot rod" today, but the action was totally "delicious" for most of the early morning for both of us. When we pulled off at about 11:30 am, we had caught & released 85 fish; only 6 being bluegill and the rest our target species, the crappie. Here are a few pictures of some of our crappie. No giants, but good all around fun!







We had a great time out there on the water, even if it was shorter than we'd like. Still having a challenge trying to maneuver a straight course side pulling, but we are getting better at it as time goes on. Great day to be on the water. Hope some of you got out to enjoy it! God Bless America!
