Steve Coleman of Tennessee and his partner, Ronnie Capps, are two of the most-successful tournament crappie fishermen in the nation. Coleman will tell us how he finds May crappie in a lake with current.
First, Ronnie and I search for structure and then check the structure for crappie. Current running through a lake carries oxygen. The crappie can hold really deep, if the lake’s deep, and current’s being pulled through it. For instance, Ronnie and I caught crappie 60-feet deep at J. Percy Priest Lake in Nashville, Tennessee. There was plenty of good structure and oxygen at that depth, but no fishing pressure. As long as crappie have enough oxygen to survive and good cover, the depth of water they hold in doesn’t really matter. Also Coleman says he fishes lighter tackle in May often using a 1/ 16- or a 1/ 32-ounce jig with a really-small minnow.
