Just FYI, I visited my Doctor after I stuck a nasty hook in me to get a Tetanus shot. He told me he would give me a shot since the last one I had was no longer effective. However, he said you can't protect yourself after the fact. In other words the shot I got would provide protection in the future, but it takes some time to be effective and if I was going to get Tetanus from the hook this shot would not help. Thank goodness I did not get Tetanus, but if it has been years since your last one, it would be wise to update your shot. We fishermen are around rusty hooks and other jagged metal around boats etc., so it would be a good idea for all of us to make sure our shots are up to date.

Thanks for the Tetanus shot information. The old folks always called this a Lockjaw shot because the symptoms were the stiffening of the jaw muscles which lead to it locking up. These shots last about 10 years but you can get the booster shots every 5 years to be on the safe side. Tetanus can be prevented but it is said that there is no cure for tetanus after you get it and 10%-20% die from it.
