When that first "run" took place 5 years ago, we drove onto the base ourselves. Now we were bused in from a distant location, now we had to carry an ID to get onto the base, now we had to pass through a metal detector, and now there were armed guards with not just pistols but locked and loaded M16's. How things have changed.
I participated in this event all five years it's been held. This year was special. Right now my good friend Billbob is lying in a hospital bed recovering from major back surgery. Billbob is an decorated veteran of the Vietnam war, and I wanted to dedicate this run to him, hoping for a speedy recovery.
Above is the raising of the flag while the National Anthem played at the beginning of the race. And below is three miles later as I approach the finish line.
Check out the below video. These disciplined guys were very motivational. I kept pace with them for at least a while. I'm not a fast runner and don't really practice, so I did not expect to keep up with this bunch.
