Were you drift fishing or anchoring. Another thing right now is a lot of people think in the heat of the summer the fish are in the deeper channels. Just have to bait up with a smorgasbord and see what they want that day. I have seen them hit big shad heads on some days and not touch them the next day. Keeping the bait fresh is the biggest thing. If you don't have a bait tank to keep them alive you can cut them on a fillet board and put them in a zip lock bag on ice. Cut shad will last a couple days on ice if the tail section is cut off.
