@Fish on Line, it's nine feet of line or so. I tie the snap swivel on, measure 1.5 fathoms of line, then tie on my hook. That's nine feet. Also the jugs are free floating. They're not anchored to the bottom or anything. I generally place them along the shelf where the new river channel drops of into the old river channel. Put out about thirty jugs, and you'll find them. No sonar needed.

No need for split shots or any kind of weight. I use a very heavy saltwater circle hook heavy enough to get the line down.
