I used the egg sinkers for 40 years on Carolina rigs. Today I use the round disk sinker with the brass eye and a sinker slide. Egg sinkers will get hung up more because they will roll downriver in a current and normally end up hung in debris. Don't think the sinker is hanging but your hook. There are several advantages to the round flat disc sinker with a sinker slide. One they clip on and off so you can change sinker weights without having to re-tie the rig if you want to add or lower the sinker size depending on the amount of current. Two because they are flat, they will not roll in current like the egg sinker. Once your egg sinker starts rolling downstream you can bet it will find something to get hung up in. Egg sinkers are still good if person is fishing straight down current but if you are fishing across the current they will roll.
