I believe you would be better off trying Lake Piru. There are some nice Crappie in that Lake and it is a bit closer to you. Rent a boat, try jigs both tubs and Curly tails, 2" or less and 2 lb and 4 lb line. Many lakes in California do not allow minnows. Also, Lake Isabella is good for Crappie in May. However, plan to stay up there over night as the wind sometimes comes up and you may only get a couple of hours on the Lake. French Gulch is the place to fish.
