My experience tells me different. In fact, of the over 55 fish caught in two days recently, only one was near a bank/fallen tree. All the rest: crappie, sunfish, perch and bass, were suspending in 4-6' in open water parallel to banks around the lake.

Is your water clear, stained or muddy? Sunny day or cloudy?
