As a general rule, I think fewer pieces are better. However, as you note above, most rods over 14' will be 3-piece.

If you need a 14-footer in your trolling spread, you'll most likely end up with a 3-piece rod.

Lots of guys on here catch a bunch of fish with 3-piece rods.
