fly rod conversions

I have an old fiberglass 8Ft 8weight fly rod and thinking of replacing the snake guides with spinning rod guides and using it for a Crappie rod with 4 pound line to throw 1/16th an 1/32 Jigs. has anyone out here tried it ?

Yes, and I didn't like it. I think a light graphite spinning rod is a much better choice.

Also, I'd hate to see an old fly rod mutilated like that. There's still a market for the old fiberglass rods. If it's in decent shape, I'm sure you could easily sell it on ebay.

I use an older (no collector value) glass rod with snake guides and it casts fine. Before you go through the effort to change the guides, try it the way it is.

Thanks ,was wondering about that . braided line with a 4 pound test leader is sort of like fly line.

I prefer snake eyes on a lot of my rods. I have many of them that I use for all sorts of stuff other than fly fishing. Most of my steelhead rods have snake eyes (and they are not fly rods). I would however be concerned with the heft of it. An 8 wt fly rod is pretty darned big. I have some awesome crappie rods that are built on 4 wt rods.

It is an Yellow Eagle Claw 8 wheight line bass rod , BUT been modified a few years ago by having the tip shut in the station wagon tail gate about 4 inches from the end. So I cut it off square stuck the remaining tip into the hallow center with some 5 Minute epoxy, does not work as well but got me through the week end.

8 weight is way heavy!! Bill Dance did a show on using a fly rod/spinning reel and he wasn't casting he was using it for dipping jigs around stumps and he was using a 4 weight.

I have 3 bamboo fly rods for fly fishing ; one my grand fathers . comes out to show my brothers grand kids and back to the case and bottom dresser drawer , then a 3Wht and a 5 wht I found at a flee market near Kalkaska Michigan for 10 dollars each. Use them on Gills an stream Trout . Thought the broken Glass rod would handle Crappie an small bass better than the bamboo.
