That's a "hand me down" superstition from the early days of seafaring ships. Potential causes range from ships sinking from being overloaded with the fruit, the fast ripening of it causing the ships to have to make their journey so fast that they didn't have time to do much else, the ripening fruit creating toxic gases when decaying, to the potential for the Brazilian Wandering Spider (or its nest) to be hidden among the bunches ... and this spider is considered the most venomous spider in the world.
