I noticed another post mention that they had goten bad where he was fishin. They finally showed up where i have been fishin this last week or two. Been waitin on them, last year at this time they gave me a ride back to the ramp. Anyway the best remedy for these things hands down is baby oil. Rub it on your ears and neck or face and no more bites. Do not try using off or deet they eat that for breakfast. Dont know why but it attracts more. I know it sounds too simple but trust me it works like a charm. They may fly around you but trust me they will not land and bite you. A friend turned me onto this and it works for me every time. So guys you may get a crazy look or two but throw a small bottle in your boat, it may stop them from runnin you out of that hot hole youre on. GOOD LUCK!!!

I use 2/3 Listerine mouth wash mixed with 1/3 water. I actually use the generic kind from the $ store. Put it in a spray bottle and spray your head generously every 15-20 min. Works good, feels refreshing, and the gnats don't stick to it.
Thanks fellas. I'm kinda whelped up from bites now. They seem to like the ears for some reason. I forgot my repellant, but what works for me is Mum's bite blocker. Works for those "no see-em's" and skeeters too. Dang Gnats!![]()
Not sure if a black gnat is like a buffalo gnat but my grandfather taught me to use vanilla extract behind the ears and on the wrists. This has always worked for me and I fish the delta and White River Refuge lakes were gnats are abundant. It has worked for me.

The Thermocells work real nice on the gnats and Moasquitoes. It is one of the best fishing investment I have made. Its not as cheap as Listerine and vanilla extract but it works and will take care of everyone in the boat.
Thanks for the tip. I didn't know that. I'll have to get me a bottle and store it on the boat.

I can't get the Thermacells to work well in a breeze. My experience with them is they do really well if the wind isn't blowing. The breeze doesn't completely stop the bugs!
