Default Millwood or Cane Creek in March

I'm thinking of making a trip to Arkansas in March in search of some biguns. I like to use the long pole around timber, I've heard Millwood is good for that type of fishing. From watching the threads, sounds like Cane Creek is good too.

Any tips on which lake would be better? Are the fish typically in pre-spawn in march? does cane creek have a lot of timber? I'm not opposed to hiring a guide, any recommendation??

You might look at Lake Greason and look Darryl Morris up. Darryl can show you how to fish on submerged structure and not have to dodge the stumps. I have fished Millwood and De Queen lake. I went out with Darryl and I now have a new appreciation for the deep clear water. Millwood Lake is always murky and the slightest wind will get you in trouble if your not familiar with the boat lanes and the lake. March is a windy month in South Arkansas.

I've only done good at Cane Creek in the fall, from late Sep thru Dec. Don't know where they go the rest of the year. The lake has so many submerged stump that it is frustrating to explore the lake for their location. Of the two choices I'd try Millwood and maybe get a guide for the first day. Good luck where ever you go.

    A bad day of fishing
beats a good day at work.

If you're looking for standing timber to fish in the spring, Millwood would be the place. Just got to find them in the 30,000 acres. Yes, March will be pre-spawn for the whites but blacks will be spawning. Just depends on the weather warming the water. Blacks will spawn in the lower 60's and whites will spawn in the upper 60's.

Here on Greeson we don't have any standing timber, but we have set nearly 100 megamats and bamboo laydowns - FISH HABITAT - During that time of year we will be fishing staging beds and pitching jigs and minnows in the shallow bank areas. Depending on the water level the megamats and bamboo laydowns will be the shallow cover or in higher water they will be the staging beds and the banks will be flooded and you pitch around tree laydowns, willows and buckbrush.

I talked to a legal book salesman one time, and he was telling me that he and some buddies went to Millwood every year for 2 consecutive weekends and always caught a ton of fish on at least one of them if not both. They were primarily bass fishing, but he said they always caught limits of crappie too using their bass rods like a long pole.

I think he said they caught the crappie around lilypads, but I don't remember what part of the lake, or what weekends, 1st & 2d of April, 2d and 3d of March or whatever. I guess I should have paid better attention.

I think that you would catch more and larger fish on Millwood...Miles of old river cuts and creeks that feed into Millwood and the Little River system.
