This has also been a great mystery to me. But, since I go both ways (bream and crappie) I have been succesful in extending my luck on Conway until about mid June. By then I have enough fish to last the summer anyway and I start playing on the pontoon until the fall bite in Gold Creek.
It has been my experience that when I can't drag a jig through the lily pads anymore, I can pick up a few more by tight lining (doodle socking) in the pads. I love to fish where the pads will be though before they get to the surface. About June it really gets frustrating for me. But, this year I hope to have some boo mats in place in some deep holes. The whole lake does not average 6 feet. So, deep is only 8' to 12' that I have found on this lake. Try searching for those areas. Gold Lake is a good one.
