Yep, they are putting on eggs real fast right now for the coming spawn. I've read that a 2-pound crappie can have up to 500,000 eggs in her belly so it takes a while to get a supply built up. We usually start seeing the first sign of new eggs forming in October when the surface temps get under 70-degrees.
YES, Lots of folks are behind on their biology.:D All the warm water fish species should be starting to produce eggs. Even the late spawners such as Catfish are already forming next summers spawn.
Last spring a lot of folks tried to say the Crappie failed to spawn. That cold spell sure scattered or prolonged the spawn. We had a good spawn on Nimrod last spring, they just did it deeper. I caught several fish in the summer that spit out Crappie fry in my livewell.
