Arkansas Black, Missouri people call it Ozark Black, harvested right before frost, best apple in the world. After last weekend's freeze I doubt there'll be any to be found this year.

Some years ago on a camping trip in the Ozarks we stopped at a old-timey country store and bought some of the best tasteing apples I have ever ate. All I can remember is they had the word black in them, what kind were they and about what would be the time of year to get some more, know it's much later in the year, seems like maybe Oct.

I was hatched in Houston Tx and my family used to plan vacations to Arkansas. Now as an adult you can imagine how much I enjoy living here.
I too remember traveling somewhere in North Arkansas and we stopped at an orchard and ate fresh apple pie with ice cream, and washed it down with fresh cider. I am not sure where that would be, but I would make monthly trips from Little Rock to have some more of that. That memory is over 40 years old!!!!

The only Black apple that I am aware of is the Arkansas black apple. You can check out Starkbrothers.com and see virtualy all the common apples available.
I am also worred about what that late freeze is going to do to the trees. They say a late freeze or summer drought can cause the oaks not to bear nuts. I know the peaches, grapes and muskadines are gone along with the wheat as far south as Crime Bluff as a result of the freeze. Sure hope it doesent kill all the fruit bearing trees crop this year.
You are probably speaking of Lincoln, AR -- home of the Apples....they have the Lincoln Apple Festival every year....SEVERAL orchards there, they are by far the MOST proud of their apples, they prepare them in about 500 diff. recipes for the festival, excellent fun. Not sure exactly when it is every year, but my oh my that fresh cider is to die for....mmm mmm good! MMOriginally Posted by DRPEPPER

It is great cider!......the festival is the 1st weekend in oct. It's worth a spring drive up there to see the trees when they blossom. I was just in n.w. arkansas and from the looks of a lot of the folliage there I'm guessing the freeze wacked them pretty good.
I will chime in an add my comments. I raise blueberries in north central arkansas. There will be not apples or peaches this fall. This last cold weather has affected between 15 and 20 states. This is the worst we have seen since 1955. Texas and south Georgia will have some fruit but from Hope,
Ar. all the way to middle Michigan I believe it is all gone. By the way I like them Ark. Blacks too.
