When the crappie aren't biting I know you're suppose to go deep but I never thought I would have to go this deep. If there's crappie in that they are living a dangerous life. I'm certain it is a school of white bass and striper. We went after them as best we could with some 1/4oz. spoons but got nothing.
The school of shad was the largest I had ever seen (some 50-60ft. tall and longer than my boat a few times over). I captured the image when I started coming off the shad and into the fish at the edge of the school. I'm going to work on them a little differently tomorrow and see if it doesn't produce anything.

I don't blame them a bit, I bet its alot cooler at 50ft than it is at the surface. Great sonar pic.
You can't fish with a hung line!
Darryl, what kind of depth finder were you using for that pic???Tknight

Are ya'll catching any shallow fish down there Darryl?we have been catching limits in 2'-6' of water all summer.....they've been in the very backs of creeks around any wood thats available,i guess they're back there feeding they are pretty aggressive for fish coming out of 90 degree water.....what a blast.

Wow, that's amazing. Nope, it's pretty slow and hot right now I hate to admit. I'm confident it won't last long though and it certainly won't stop us from chasing them most every day.Originally Posted by bugman

Well, it's really amazing what you learn everyday on the water. This morning first thing I went back to the coordinate I had saved just for a starting point looking for the fish. I really didn't expect to see anything specific, but low and behold there was that huge school of shad again in the same exact spot. What are the odds. Too great for sure. After further investigation, what I thought was a large school of shad with fish on the edges was infact an old patch of standing timber. I was under the understanding that Lake Greeson had been clear cut before they filled the lake. Not so apparently. I found three others in the same area but no fish today. Nonetheless, I learned something more about the lake and now have a definite checkout spot when looking for schooling fish.
