Thread: Just bought a cheap Kayak. Help :)

Need some advice on what bodies of water to fish or at least what types of places. I mainly bought it to fish what's left of Conway lol but I figure the opportunities are endless. Creeks, oxbows, small WMA lakes...where have you been successful? Also, ANY yak tips are appreciated. Thanks!

For certain don’t skimp on these….

I didn’t cheap out on a good vest or paddle. Then an easy to use and easily accessible tackle storage system. I don’t like moving around and spinning and turning in funny positions in kayak, that’s how you lose balance and flip. I also used an anchor more with my paddle kayak or way to tie off to something.

I was wondering about the tackle aspect. Any recommendations?

Brush grabs work well on creeks. Plenty of hydration, a cheap car sponge to get the paddle splash out of the bottom if it is a sit in kayak. Never paddle farther down a creek than you are prepared to paddle back up against the current. Rod floats are awesome if you may turn it over. A paddle leash is great to have as well.

With my paddle kayak I just use a small tackle bag with 3600 size Plano boxes inside. I can switch these around with my other boxes. I keep the tackle bag within easy reach near my feet. Nothing fancy but it works. My pedal kayak is larger and more stable and I have a milk crate bag I keep behind my seat. Once again I have 3600 size boxes in there. That one is harder to get to and I wouldn't want to do this with the paddle kayak since it's less stable.

I have a BPS PFD with 2 large 2 small zipper pockets. License and light weight tackle go in them. Retractable's for whistle, light, forceps, needle nose and knife. I figure how I'll be fishing and take only that style tackle. All fits in a 3600 case and under the seat

If your planning to fish in the colder months invest in some good water proof pants.
Tackle wise, I prefer a long jig pole ( 12 and 14 ft) with jigs. I can catch fish in my kayak or pirogue when they are super shallow where my big boat would spook them.

Many thanks for the tips all, made the first "fishing" trip yesterday to Conway. Water is too low to get to "the cove" now unfortunately so fished around the I 40 bridge. Went pretty well but YES it is hard to access tackle behind you
