Question Any advice for Lake Maumelle?

The paper (AGFC) said that Lake Maumelle was good for crappie and so did the guys at the boat dock. Where are the crappie (or any fish for that matter) biting on Lake Maumelle? Any advice? THanks!

Its been a long time since I fished Maumelle so I am somewhat out of the loop out there. All I can say from past experiences is you can catch some fish trolling. Since there is no grass or stumps/stickups you rarely get hung up so its easy fishing. A white Bomber crankbait has worked the best for us. Another good thing about trolling out there is you can find the occasional brush pile while your covering that much water. If you find brushpiles in Maumelle you will catch some fish since that thing has as much structure as a bathtub.

If you get out there be sure and let us know how you do.

I hate to be negative, But about all I have ever caught out of this lake is a sore Butt!!!!

I always end up on the miles away from the ramp, and the ride back can be rough in a stick steer. This lake is to be respected in smaller boats. Mine is a 16' and I would not want to be out there with anything smaller.

Don't mean to hog your post, But, does anyone know if placing brush is allowed? It sure would be handy to the house if there were places to fish on this lake.

Sinking of brush is deffinately not allowed on Maumelle though the fine is only 150.00 if you get caught per there rules and regulations. This is why brushpiles that occur "naturaly" are so effective in attracting fish.

Here is a link to the lake if any of you want to look at the rule book for the lake.

item #30.... no boats under 14 feet.... from what I hear about the wind on that lake, it's probably the safest thing. I just can't believe the fish structure rule. that one stinks.

    Thumbs down struck out!

No luck, Sunday and Monday thunderstorms and lightning blew up with lots of wind and white caps. Our 17 ft bassmaster did just fine on the rough seas. Rumor had it that the crappie were biting but no one seemed to have a clue where and on what bait.

Well the wife and kid are in Florida for the week so I'm going to go out this afternoon with Longarm and see if we can find a few crappie on Maumelle. There are a number of main lake humps that I have been wanting to find so we are going on a search mission today and then plan to set up for a stalk tonight. Will post our results tomorrow but as any Maumelle pro knows, don't hold your breath.

Well Longarm had to play Mr Mom yesterday so I drug CEB away from the books for a boat ride on Maumelle. We did some scouting and broke in my new gps by marking some main lake humps and chanel drops that look promising. We also found an old pond with a levy that topped out at 18 feet that looked real good.

I took CEB back to the launch about 8:00 so he could get back to work and I headed back to the pond we found. I set up right on the old pond levy, got the lights out, then the rods and was ready to go in perfect time. I opened the baitwell to start baiting up and almost cried. All but 2 of my minnows were dead. I almost packed it in I was so mad but decided to see what I could do with those two minnows. I put them on and gave em a ride to the bottom and decided to put a couple of jigs on two other poles so I could have 4 baits in the water. Before I got my second jig tied on a big ole sow white bass nailed one of the minnows I had tied on my 24 inch ice fishing rod. She wraped me around the lights and my jig line but I got her in. While I was fixing that mess my other minnow pole bent down and I brought in a nice 2 to 3 pound saugeye.

I went ahead with my jig pole plan but with little confidence as I never nightstalk with jigs and I knew they were nailing minnows. I finaly found a jig they liked and ended up with a great night for Maumelle. Caught 7 big whitebass, 2 saugeye 2 crappie and a big bull bream. One of the saugeye I would guess at almost 5 pounds which was a hoot on my 10 foot jig pole. The only jig they would hit were the two I picked up at crappie camp from Mike Simpson http://crappiemagic.com/. His jigs are awesome as not only do they perfectly ballance when using a small swivel but also have jewlers wire in them keeping the jig body in place. Not onece did I have to adjust the jig body with all those fish I caught, so thanks Mike for saving my trip.

Everybody this is a great time of year to go fish Maumelle on a nightstalk as you can actualy beat the heat, skeeters and water lice out there. Just find you a main lake hump or steep drop and set up for a few hours. If you go any night other than Tuesday or Friday you will have the lake to yourself as they hold bass tourneys those nights.
