Thread: bad cold out who is going ?

I have not hunted much and getting the urge to try fishing once weather moderates some . Anyone giving it a try ? Sure been quiet . Did hear something about a Shad die off in Dardanelle Bay last week but it has not been cold long enough for temps to kill them off yet I would not think .

I’ll be on the water the rest of this week, but not fishing. We will be running nets on Conway. Working up a thousand fish in sub freezing temps is tough on the hands.

Here I was going to take Vacation and fish and now I here you are fishing with nets? There wont be any left to fish for. Who is needing a fish Fry? LOL!

Funny guy! I like to remind anglers that we handle around 10,000 crappie on Lake Conway during a sample and we generally need to keep around 200-300 fish for age and growth analysis. We nee d to keep 10 of every inch class of crappie we sample. So a lot of the crappie that are kept for age and growth analysis are dinks. We typically don’t catch nets full of slabs. We do see some
good fish but they are far out numbered by the 12-in and smaller crappie. I know that you are just giving me a hard Carry. No worries.

i am definitely giving you a hard time. but i do have one Concern. You are telling on yourself now. The Minimum length limit on Conway is 10” crappie. Do you release anything under 10”s. LOL! Thanks for all the efforts you guy put into the management of the fish populations.

We set and run the nets during daylight hours. Nets are supposed to soak ~24 hours. So when it is cold, we set them after the sun has been up a couple of hours and then pull them 24 hours later. Running nets and working up fish when air and water temps are mid 40s and below is not fun on the hands. We haven’t found a glove that both keeps your hands warm and still allows you to have good dexterity with hands and fingers for working up fish. If anyone has any suggestions, I’m all ears. We have tried several styles of gloves and either your hands stay warm and dry but you can’t hardly handle fish or you can handle the fish but your hands are ice cubes.

Years ago when trapping I hated gloves . Rub hands down with gasoline and wipe off with clean rags . It will stop water from soaking into your skin . The water beads up and runs of like on a ducks back .

That sounds pretty hard core. I’m not sure I want to smell like gas and not sure how good that would be for the fish that get thrown back. Thanks for the idea though. I’ll suggest it to Tom and see if he wants to try it. I guess something like petroleum jelly would work too?
