    Default Spawn ?

It's crazy, could not find anything but lots of dinks and Bass in the shallow brush. The bass are tough to handle on a jig pole. I caught 1/2 dozen descent Crappie around brushpiles. I saw 2 older guys wading and they said yesterday was fair , but slow today. The water was 70 degrees on the surface. The bigger dark males were suspended over the bushpiles. A local perdicts they will spawn about May 1st. That's awful late and this has been one crazy season on Nimrod. Wonder if we will get a spawn or not ? The Bass appear to have spawned already.

That is sort of the pattern I found on the Little Maumelle this weekend. I fished fairly hard Friday evening and Saturday morning. I caught around 2 dozen throwbacks where the big Mammas are suposed to be. The only two keepers I caught all weekend were still out staging; and I wasn't very proud of them. I don't know where the bigger ones are.

DP ,I fished awhile today and did OK. Started late and was going to Bass fish. After a while I picked up my jig pole and Bass fishing was over. I caught several ,but only kept 14 before the wind started bad. I had a reel crap out and broke off a fish and changed reels. Then hooked something else big ,but the hook came loose. My biggest Crappie was over 15''. They are shallowing up. My fish were in 6 to 8 ft of water on brushpiles. They were sows ,but tried the bank brush and only caught small males.

If your surface temps are in the low 70's then they have been spawning and are most likely finishing up now. Slow doesn't surprise me at all. When crappie are caught in the shallows during "the spawn" they usually caught in a pre- or post- stage. Once they are on the bed with eggs they are very hard to catch. Not all the crappie lay their eggs at the same time, so that is why they can be caught randomly in the shallows throughout the whole period of time as they move in and out of the shallows. Finding and fishing the staging areas near the spawn bedding areas can usually be productive in all stages from pre-spawn to post-spawn.

This year on Lake Greeson they spawned in late March. Then the water warmed up beyond the right spawning temp. Then we got that really cold front and lost nearly 20 degrees of water temp. Now the water has warmed back up and they are finishing up what they started. The water has been very clear so they are spawning in deeper water than normal. To confound that the water level is such that there's not much cover at the level they want to spawn. All this rain we are getting today is going to raise the lake level, cool the water off some and hopefully stain it up. It will be interesting to see what it does to the fish. Of course, my hopes is that it REALLY TURNS THEM ON!!!

Hello Nimrod, I have been a member of the Texas Fishing Forum for several years, but just joined Crappie.com today. I have been talking to you by telephone about fishing Nimrod for the past couple of weekends, but we have had to delay it a couple of times due to weather etc., Now I have some kind of virus and don't feel worth a darn. We still want to try to come to Nimrod and are looking at next weekend, and would like to try and fish with you on Friday, May 4 if you have an opening. If I don't get a reply from you, I will call you again by telephone. Thanks for your patience!!
